Prevention
Keep rodents out
- Seal cracks, gaps, and entry holes
- Store food in sealed containers
- Reduce clutter where rodents can nest
- Use traps where appropriate
Clean safely
- Ventilate enclosed areas first
- Do not sweep dry droppings
- Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning
- Disinfect contaminated surfaces carefully
High-risk places
Risk is higher in enclosed spaces where rodents live or have lived, such as sheds, cabins, garages, attics, basements, barns, and storage rooms.
Good practice: Open and air out the area before you clean, then use wet cleaning and disinfecting methods instead of dry sweeping.
